The mobile ones that look like boxes put on the floor with a hole in front are easily detected.
On the other hand, the 'gun'-type detectors are only triggered as and when the cop thinks that an approaching car is speeding. Now, if there are no cars in front of you and the cop is using a gun-type, activate-on-demand radar/laser, then the detector will only warn you when he fires a beam, and that would be too late. If the cop zapped the car in front, your detector should be able to warn you in advance so you have time to slow down (assuming he hasn't zapped you already)
