I think that the lens that is inside the head light itself controls the beam and give it the original look

You mean the Ballast :)

What I know is that the ballast is the machine for xenon high voltage...
Am speaking about the lens inside the headlight,
In my e36 there are no original ballasts as it is not equipped originally with xenon
