    SMG Warning Light

OK, i'm starting to get pretty bored of this now, my patience with my "dream car" is wearing a little thin. This morning, i had a trouble free journey to work and decided to stop at the servce station for some food. When i returned to my car from the shop, i started the engine, and the SMG warning light stayed on (it's not flashing). According to the book, this means that there's a fault in the system and that i need to take the car to be looked at right away.

Presumably this type of specialist work is best done at BMW themselves? Do they just plug it into the computer and get a diagnosis quickly and easily or is this likely to take longer? What common faults occur with SMG systems?

I know that these types of cars take a lot of looking after but there does come a point when you have to conclude that the pain is outweighing the pleasure. Since i have owned the car, i have replaced the tyres (OK, so that's not the car's fault!), cracked the windscreen (not BMW's fault either), had the SMG fault, had the run-flat warning light come on twice, had a reccuring fault with my +ve SMG paddle, had the central bearing and a few other parts replaced.

I love my car, but honestly, i don't think i can do this anymore. Life is complicated enough without having to take your car to the garage every few weeks. I have so much stuff to do before the weekend and now i'm going to be without a car. Yeah, the M3 looks good, and it's fun to drive, but above all it's supposed to be a practical machine, and since i have owned it, it's proved to be nothing but impractical and bloody expensive.

change SMG relay... which will cost you 100 dirhams.

rifo, tariq, wazif, ahmad and A.kanso, and many more had them changed last month.

Thanks for reply Bruno! Well, i hope it's that! Is that a consumable part or is it just prone to breaking? 100aed :woot:

We all changed it just in case it was the reason why it keeps faulting. There's no need to take it to AGMC... I personally took it to X-Service and they replaced the part and bled the SMG. I agree with you on the car issue... it's completely frustrating! U love the car but at times u just wanna throw it out..

Welcome to the world of new cars! :)

it's more like welcome to the world of E46 M3s...

i just reached work and now i can write a constructive reply. our cars, E46 M3s, require the extra care that a typical car owner won't prolly pay attention to. Having that said, you have to change parts constantly regardless of their condition. Everyone treats their cars differently; when it comes down to my car, i usually give it some extra care and change these fragile parts regardless of their condition; touch wood, this strategy has paid off and so far nothing wrong happened to my car.

I usually place a small budget on the side for servicing the car, maybe 1000 dirhams monthly is what i pay for my car's service. that's an average figure.

SMG bleeding, smg relay, TPS, spark plugs, all bushings, brake pads, brake disks, even brake lines are things that you will need to change in order to keep the car in top form... you can even order an extra set of coils for the car to be on the safe side because they are considered as fragile parts.

i've been a member of e46fanatics since 2004 and m3forum since 2006. i sort of memorized what parts usually fail and how to handle the car's service.

              Phil,

I really know what you mean. The M3 IS a wonderful car to drive and feel the road with but yeah, eventually you'll reach a point where you just want a Corolla that drives and not whines ! Seriously speaking, This isn't a daily drive machine & no no ! Don't think of getting new BMWs from Agency because they have faults too !! BMW do a great manufacturing job but they sometimes miss the small details where we have to watch out for them.

For now, go change your SMG Relay & I believe there is a previous post regarding the SMG Relay. Hopefully after that you'll have time to relax again until something else breaks down.

Believe me, I've had the car since April and till now i've changed: Set of tires, Engine Coils, Bearings & few Bushes, Wipers, SMG Relay, SMG Bleeding, Throttle Position Sensor, 4 Rotors and 4 Pads, Did wheel balancing 100 times, and now ..... I need clutch ... what a happy person I am

              Good luck

That line made me lol. It's like you KNOW something's going to go wrong very soon, you just hope it's going to be something minor and inexpensive!

Thanks for your help guys, it's nice to know that i'm not alone on this one! I'll get the relay replaced and hopefull i'll get at least a few minutes hassle-free motoring!

When I bought my car what I really wanted was an M3, but I had already seen how fragile the SMG gearbox was on a friend's new car and buying a used one was always going to be too much of a risk. That's not to say my 330 hasn't thrown up some surprises...
I think that RiFo's comment is telling "seriously speaking, this isn't a daily drive machine." Of course it should be, but when I needed a reliable car for a long commute my head reluctantly told my heart that an M3 was not the right choice.
