OK, i'm starting to get pretty bored of this now, my patience with my "dream car" is wearing a little thin. This morning, i had a trouble free journey to work and decided to stop at the servce station for some food. When i returned to my car from the shop, i started the engine, and the SMG warning light stayed on (it's not flashing). According to the book, this means that there's a fault in the system and that i need to take the car to be looked at right away.
Presumably this type of specialist work is best done at BMW themselves? Do they just plug it into the computer and get a diagnosis quickly and easily or is this likely to take longer? What common faults occur with SMG systems?
I know that these types of cars take a lot of looking after but there does come a point when you have to conclude that the pain is outweighing the pleasure. Since i have owned the car, i have replaced the tyres (OK, so that's not the car's fault!), cracked the windscreen (not BMW's fault either), had the SMG fault, had the run-flat warning light come on twice, had a reccuring fault with my +ve SMG paddle, had the central bearing and a few other parts replaced.
I love my car, but honestly, i don't think i can do this anymore. Life is complicated enough without having to take your car to the garage every few weeks. I have so much stuff to do before the weekend and now i'm going to be without a car. Yeah, the M3 looks good, and it's fun to drive, but above all it's supposed to be a practical machine, and since i have owned it, it's proved to be nothing but impractical and bloody expensive.
