Drivers in Abu Dhabi could get a speeding ticket if they go over the limit by just 1kph under plans being brought in by the emirate’s police.
Currently, speed traps are set to go off when someone exceeds a certain level above the speed limit, which can be up to 20kph extra.
However, in an interview with the Arabic-language paper Emarat Al Youm, the head of Abu Dhabi traffic police said they will phase this out within two years.
Brigadier General Hussein al Harethi said: “The grace speed given to all vehicles will be annulled within two years in line with a new strategy to manage speed on the roads.
This decision is designed to develop a safe traffic system on the emirate’s roads.” “Annulling that grace speed means
all drivers must adhere to the speed limit… we will set all the traffic cameras accordingly,” he added.
The move comes less than two weeks after new speed limits were brought in on certain roads in the capital. The changes saw the speed in residential areas cut to between 20kph and 40kph.
Abu Dhabi Municipality is also laying a new red surface on some streets to alert motorists that they are entering a revised speed area.
The move followed a study by the municipality and the Department of Transport that found lower speed limits in urban areas would improve safety.
