Kubica suffers multiple fractures in crash

Robert Kubica has suffered multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand in a high-speed rally crash on Sunday.

The Renault driver was taking part in the Rally Ronde di Andora in Italy on Sunday morning when he reportedly lost control of his Skoda Fabia.

The car left the road at high speed and crashed into a wall of a crash with the driver's side sustaining the bigger impact.

His co-driver, Jacub Gerber, emerged from the wreck unhurt but Kubica had to be cut from the car, waiting almost an hour as specialist extraction equipment was brought to the scene.

The Pole was airlifted to the Santa Corona hospital in Pietra Ligure where he is undergoing surgery.

"After undergoing extensive medical checks this morning, Robert Kubica has been diagnosed with multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand," Renault said in a statement.

"He is currently undergoing surgery at the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure.

"Robert suffered a high-speed accident this morning while competing in the Ronde di Andora Rally.

"Daniel Morelli, Robert's manager, will be available for the press in front of the hospital emergency entrance at 16h30 CET."

There are fears for Kubica's career as this is not the first time the Pole has suffered a serious arm injury as in 2003, driving in F3, he crashed and it required a reported 18 titanium bolts to fix his left arm.

The surgery was successful , before the surgery they said 80% they would have to amputate his arm but now they said it has been successful and he will keep his arm.
However apparently he'll need atleast 1 year before he gets back to racing.

p.s : just before the race he told the reporters that all he wishes from the race is for all the drivers to finish it alive.

i feel bad for him, he is a talented promising driver. should have been hitting the gym instead before the F1 season started instead of rallying. hope he gets to race again!

I was wondering the same thing... a bit like the Isle of Man TT races, mostly each year someone dies during the race as the course is just on regular roads - people have died hitting postal mail boxes and lamp-posts - they really should cancel this race or move it to a safer area.

I read on the BBC news ticker that he might not drive in F1 again as part of his hand was severed.

I think the press release should not have read "crashed into a wall of a crash" but "crashed into a wall of a church"

We are hoping the best for him and his career as my wife is Polish; this was an awful crash.

He was unlucky, his co-pilot walked out with few scratches.

the guard rail he crashed into went thru the car on the drivers side and almost severed his arm :(

Wishing him a speedy recovery...thank god the worst is over!

After Vettel, Kubi is my favorite F1 driver....But it's hard to see him back in a helmet in the speed-of-light F1 sport.

                  In F1, if you're perfect, you're slow.
