    SMG2 HEATING PROBLEMS

Ok guy's I think I may have a solution with this intermittent heat related SMG warning light popin up now and again when the car is on idle for a long period.

This problem I think is caused by the gearbox oil over heating on idle, the exhuast running along side the gearbox does'nt help the oil temp in the gearbox.
There are sensors that are fitted on the gearbox to monitor oil presure/temp and speed senor.

If the gearbox oil level is to low it would increase the temp and decrease the oil presure thus giving a warning SMG loght to pop up.

If the gearbox oil has lost its viscosity this would also increase oil temp to rise above the threashold and pop up the SMG light for a short period.

There is no other way to keep the oil temp below its working parameters.

This SMG fault can only happen in dubai due to very high temp's

So guy's who is going to give me there M3 so that I can fit a secondary electric cooling fan by the gearbox and see if this mod will cure the over heating issue.

This secondary electric fan will be of a mini cooper s electric streeing rack, small in size but very effective.

    ANY OFFERS?????????????????

Lets see if anybody comes forward with an intermittent SMG fault!

Otherwise I will try it on your car Rifo mate.

Shak, where exactly are u thinking to mount the fan? Any fabrication? How many watts is the fan consumption?

We don't have a gearbox oil cooler, do we?

Yes you are right there is no oil cooler unlike the E60 M5.I was thinking of fabricating between the SMG pump and the two sensors on the gearbox. This will suck air pass the SMG pump along the SMG lines and across the two sensors. This should lower the temp of the SMG pump and its high presure lines, two senors and the gearbox oil temp.

The small electric fan draws about 1.5 Amps and will be connected via a manual switch or it can be connected to the Aux fan in a parallel circuit.

what i understood is that shak wants to install a fan that blows at the gearbox housing itself, in my opinion this won't help much in reducing the gearbox temp because u need to reduce the temp of the oil not the metal housing ....ie u need an oil trans cooler, but this cooler will need a design that takes the oil out of the housing, cool it then put it back in the housing, so u basically need a hole in the housing (the worst part) piping, and a heat exchanger
but what about SMG hydraulic oil temp, from the knowledge i know about SMG, hydraulic oil temp can cause SMG fault light as well so what i thought of is that if it is hydraulic oil temp (not trans oil temp) is causing the fault, it is much easier to cool it

No Shak is cooling the tranny oil IMO...

Bedewi, you forgot to add an oil pump after adding the transmission oil cooler (extra head). Racing teams would mount diff and gearbox oil coolers around the rear subframe for there is no space to do this in the vicinity around the gearbox.

A problem with the addition of the electric fan is how uniform would the air flow across the gearbox be. You don't want to localize your cooling, might add a pair of fans. But I'd need to get under the car to see how the space is like (not much!!).
