    So u guys nailed it!

i have to say, im very impressed by the accuracy of problem identification u guys have nailed it! 2 days ago i posted a thread regarding my car's problems of jolts and gear changes.! TODAY! around 2 hours ago, my gear box almost went bye bye since everytime i press the accelerator, it jolts hard then continues normally, so i decided to be the one choosing gears and switched to tiptronic and while i was on 2nd gear planning to change to 3rd gear, the rpm went high, then suddenly i find it on 4th gear! later, some sign showed up on my dashboard, a circular thing or indicated by number 36 in the picture, however, my sign didn't have the exclamation mark in the middle. Need your advise on what to do... Thanks alot!

yup thats what i was talking about mate, its ur SlushBox giving up..... the things ur describing qualifies as slipping along with not having enough oil pressure to select the gear. So as i told u before the cheapest and the immidiate thing you have to do is flushing the gear oil and swap in a new filter. Get the OEM oil from central spare parts in sharjah industrial area. This will make the car feel much better and might actualy solve the problem.

Now if it didnt you have to find a good body valve for ur gearbox and swap that in, and all will be good :)

        Hello Bashar,
i contacted X-service center and briefed them about my problem, A guy called Sarish (not sure of the spelling) explained to me that the oil or the filter is not the problem and changing them won't solve the problem. He referred me to a guy named Haroot who works in a company called "Doplex" (not sure of the spelling again) and he said that i need to get it inspected first and not waste money on changing gear oil. Any ideas?

I know that they are going to say so since most of the cases they face are way worse than what u describe.... Ive found that a fresh oil along with a new filter wouldnt completely solve ur problem, but will smooth out the gear changes and make them better. and might as well solve it if ur oil is old or low :)

Going for a Body Valve or a whole gearbox would be really expensive in term of parts and laybor so thats why i said go for an oil change and see what happenes since its the cheaper solution.

We had the same problem in a 540i E39 and we changed the oil and filter and all was good again...... unit the guy over heated and drove all the way to AD with his car temp. gauge cracking the red mark damaging his engine.

So now its all up to you man... you could send it to X and let them check it out, or you could by the oil and the filter and go to any mechanic for an oil change and see what happens :)

            +1

I had the same problem on my x5, I took my car all over Abu Dhabi and all told me your gearbox needs to be changed until I passed by a garage, he told me to check the oil and the body valve. he save me shanging a gearbox because i was about to do it which is DHS10,000.

Drive slow, don't force her to shift ! And move from parking only after temp has reached middle. Automatics need high temperature (250+*F) to work effeciently.

Sorry guys for the late reply. so i went ahead and took my car to dexol gear specialists and said that there's a problem in the gearbox and would cost a min. of 4000 and a max. of 8000! ofcourse, i was drove away from their place leaving a pile of dust for them to look at. moving on, i went to falcon's garage as advised by bruno. Adel, a very nice guy working there inspected it and advised me to change the gear oil and filter even though there's a chance that doing so will not fix my problem. he explained it to me and he was pretty convincing and oh, he says hi to all of u guys! :D it will be done my tomorrow, wish me luck guys and thanks for your time!! :D:D

thanks guys, but apparently luck wasn't on my side.. The oil that came out, according to Adel, was completely wasted and black, and he also mentioned that if i'd just carried out the gear service 2 or 3 months earlier, i would've saved the gearbox. Now, the gear box would cost me 3500 to fix and 1000 labour + 500 for the oil, so total will be around 5000... Pretty disappointing, especially being the end of the month when cash isn't flowing. Speaking of which, I'm planning to sell it after getting fixed, for 40,000 with its 190k mileage and i found a 2003 E46 330i manual 4doors for 37,000 with 79k mileage, good deal?? (I know it's off topic but thought of getting ur thoughts :D) Thanks for your support!!!!

the 03' 330 manual sounds good... also the price is good.

it saddens me that the gear is gone though :(

Common with BMW slushboxes, they would drive well for miles then give you very short warning and kapoot !
+1 for the 330i 5-spd, but it get thoroughly checked !
