So the M3 has been hecking up occasionally and randomly while driving, especially when I ease off the accelerator or give it the tiny low revs while warming up. Until 2 days ago things got really sour after leaving TAM Engineering workshop (they didn't work on the car). The car was violently shaking randomly and immeditaely recognized it's the fuel pump!! Lucky, smarty me I had ordered mine 2 weeks ago and just got it that very same day....Replaced it just now with Bashar and it's business again.
Tools required: 10-mm wrench/wrench socket, hammer, flat screw driver, rags/towel, flash light (if you do it at night).
Estimated time: 40 minutes.
P.S: BE SURE to get the 5 bar fuel pump for the M cars. Non-M BMWs use a 3 bar unit!
P.P.S: This DIY must be carried out in an airy, well ventilated space to avoid fuel inhaling. The battery must be DISCONNECTED, almost-empty fuel tank, no sparks/flames from any source, and be well grounded yourself to avoid any electrical discharges through your body. It is always the best idea to have a fire extinguisher handy with a friend next to you.
Right, so here's how it goes:
- Take out the rear seat bench with a friend as you'll need to wiggle it left and right till it comes out.
- There are two leads beneath the bench, your pump is that on the passenger side. Remove the padding carefully and you'll find the lead secured with 4 x 10-mm nutts. Use your wrench socket for an easier removal.
- Remove the wiring harness plug by sliding its envelope first before attempting to pull the plug out.
- The main fuel supply line next is a tricky one. Attached to the pump with a black connector with 2 squeezable pins, use a clamp to press them both at the same time and pull it out simultaneously. Get your rags/towels ready before pulling out the connector as remaining fuel in the supply line will come out.
- With the hammer and the flat screw driver, loosen the pressure ring pressing the pump in a counter-clockwise direction (righty tighty, lefty loosey). Patience is a virtue.
- Now you can pull out the pump, but do so slowly to avoid dropping the pump O-ring in the tank.
- Now that you have the pump and O-ring out, replce them with the new ones; O-ring first, pump goes in (mind the float and let it inside first), pressure ring on top and tighten it by hand till it stops then use the hammer and screw driver to make it tight, connect the main fuel supply line, connect wiring harness, put the lead back on and tighten the 4 x 10-mm nutts, pading back on top, and finally seat bench back on.
When your done with the installation, put the key in the battery position and listen to the pump. Once confirmed start the car 4-5 times keeping it idling for 10-20 seconds before you drive off. This is to allow the pump to fill up the drained line and retain vaccuum pressure inside again.
Happy DIY!
