Late last year, the first rumors around a BMW i8S surfaced on the interwebs. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, BMW plans to launch the M 100 – internal name for the project – a special “i” car that was first managed by the M division.
According to Autobild, the project is supervised by CEO Norbert Reithofer and is directed by Roberto Fedeli, the ex-Ferrari chief engineer.
BMW i8S builds atop the lightweight philosophy of the i8, but with a new, more dynamic and more agile design. The suspension and kinematics are redesigned and/or tailored aggressive, springs and dampers are designed to be much tighter, providing better grip and traction.
The aerodynamics of the car have been vastly improved as well with a stabilizing “ground effect” which plants the car on the road. It supposedly weighs around 1,600 kg.
The powertrain has been revised as well. The electric motor now produces 204 hp while the conventional engine is now a 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine with around 286 horsepower. A 27 hp from a small electric motor – used as a generator – brings the total power output to over 500 hp. The maximum torque is said to be around 700 Newton meters.
BMW uses a new automatic transmission with eight stages from Aisin.
The top speed is limited to 250 km/h and the acceleration to 100 km/h comes in 3.5 seconds.
BMW will only build 100 units of the i8S and it will debut in March 2016. The first cars will be delivered to customers in September 2017.
The price? A reportedly 250,00 euros. Even the final name is up for discussion, with i8S and i8CS being the two options.
