BMW 5 GT OFFICIALLY a Mistake.

It was only a matter of time....

Jim O'Donnell, the CEO of BMW North America, has admitted the company's decision to axe the 5-Series Touring in the United States was a mistake.

Citing low sales, the executive said the 5-Series GT has failed to entice wagon buyers and is sending those customers to Mercedes. Furthermore, the hatchbacks that do sell are being bought by people who would have normally purchased a 7-Series.

In the United States, BMW expected to sell 4,000 to 8,000 GTs annually. In reality, the company sold 2,848 units in 2010 and is on track to sell 2,160 this year. The situation is getting bad enough that some dealers have stopped ordering the cars altogether.

Despite the fiasco, BMW has learned their lesson and will keep the next-generation 3-Series Touring in their lineup. However, it is apparently too late for the company to bring the current 5-Series Touring to America. According to O'Donnell, "It's in the back of my mind. When we do the next generation, maybe we should."

      That's ONE word :slap:

Back on topic, I can't think of many more comfortable cars than the GT. I think if they offered it with a 3D-Peter Pan-movie-goggle set to wear/play while walking up to it, probably that would've helped out the sale.

Porsche got it right with the Panamera...Simply because they knew how to market it. Remember the Panamera campaign? Where they kept the world waiting for almost a year, then they showed the cars snout a couple of months before the release?
                They did it right!

I believe it is not marketing where BMW failed. The car itself has nothing to offer and is uglee.

The Panamera on the other hand has only 1 week spot and that it the rear end. Still it overcomes that shortfall by excellence in performance, interior and the overall design (excluding the rear end).

Don't think even that would have worked with the GT - it reminds me of the Renault Fuego GTL 'light-bulb' with the bulky rear-end.

The tourers are rare classics on the road, with nothing usually detracting from the beauty of the original car. 'Maybe they should' make some new 5-tourings next time around ... duh!
