The new BMW M3 prototypes have done a pretty good job of hiding from our cameras over the past few months. But now our spies have managed to get a glimpse of a development model on video giving WCF readers the best look yet at the new high performance beast.
Whilst official technical details are being kept under wraps by the Bavarian automaker, rumors have surfaced that the 2014 M3 will be powered by a new tri-turbocharged 3.3-litre six-cylinder engine rated at around 450 hp (336 kW / 456 PS). We have also been assured of lower running costs due to the higher foxus on very low fuel consumption.
Additionally, the newest M3 will lose a bit of weight in comparison to its predecessor with the use of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components.
Full details are due to be released later in the year.

According to InsideLine, BMW is developing a brand new V6 engine that will power the new M3 when it hits the market in 2014. The news comes somewhat as a surprise as BMW has never produced a V6 powered model in their long and illustrious history. The switch to a V-configuration will also represent the M3's first foray away from the high-revving naturally-aspirated units to the turbocharged arena - another major change in BMW's engineering principle over the past few years.
The engine in question was chosen against the more familiar inline-6 due to packaging and balancing issues. It will benefit from two twin-scroll turbochargers and will likely have a displacement of 3.0-liters with power output rated at 429hp (320kW/435PS) and 548Nm (405 lb-ft) of torque.
The next generation M3 will grow by 3.7 inches in length over its E90 predecessor, but it will also shed a few pounds (75lbs / 34kg) due to the lightweight aluminum materials used in the chassis.
The new generation M3 will also get its own codename for the first time with F80 being stated in the report. Additionally, the M4 Coupe & Convertible will be known as the F82 and are also expected to receive the same power unit as their M3 sibling.
Special thanks to Luis Baston of Kane Design for the rendering!

I'm not so worried... I mean, prior to the launch of the 1M, the whole wide BMW-world was afraid that it would be another screw-up, similar to the X5M and X6M. Luckily, the reality proved otherwise and it doesn't feel turbo-charged at all. Right, Ayman? ;-)
Yes, I know atmospherical is the ultimate, but we might as well face reality. And if somebody can make those multiple turbos work, BMW can! I happily put my money down on it now!
