MINI Cooper challenges Porsche 911 – Courage or Arrogance?

MINI launches a Facebook page (MINI VS PORSCHE) and has officially challenged Porsche 911 to a race. The MINI contestant, the Cooper S model against Porsche’s 911 Carrera S.

The challenge is set to take place on June 22nd at Road Atlanta race track. To encourage Porsche to show up they’ve created a petition in which they hope to fill with e-signatures from fans eager to see the race happen.

Mini USA CEO Jim McDowell, wants Porsche USA president Detlev von Platen to meet him at Road Atlanta on June 21st with the drivers of their choice. Without a doubt, the 911 Carrera S is a far more potent car, but MINI says “..there’s no accounting for heart. And we’ve got that in spades.”

event will be closed to the public, but expect live reporting from the event from selected journalists.

Regardless if the MINI wins or loses, the challenge will draw plenty of viral marketing for the Oxford-based company, known for their genius marketing tricks.

they just want to cause a hit in the market to draw brand attention... it's a marketing strategy used to make people over the time learn more that Mini exists, it makes people talk about the brand and it grows stronger with time.

try to remember all the marketing that mini worldwide does and look at any dealership and see for yourself. In AD there is a Mini inside a wall, now that to me is a balls dangling, but to them they think it's cool. well each his own.

A Porsche 911 (commissioned by MINI) has triumphed over a MINI Cooper in a marketing-fueled challenge event at Road Atlanta.

Despite rigging the course, by staging it in the confined infield, the 911 beat the Cooper by two seconds. Undeterred by the loss, MINI pointed out the two seconds are worth $38,000 each, in reference to the price difference between the two cars.

Despite MINI's back tracking bravado, hopefully this will put an end to MINI's dubious attempt to grab headlines. Over the past few weeks, the company has done everything from challenge Porsche in the New York Times to rent a plane with a banner reading "Dear Porsche, Bring it! Love, MINI."
