BMW 5 Series GT textile sculpture revealed
Spanish-born, Milan-based architectural designer Patricia Urquiola and Italian designer Giulio Ridolfo have unveiled their sculpture inspired by the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo. The project was sponsored by BMW, along with Danish textile specialists Kvadrat and Italian lighting firm Flos, and was introduced during Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan earlier this month.
Called "The Dwelling Lab," the sculpture features five conical geometric shapes that jut out in a way meant to draw passers-by to the cabin. Accentuating Urquiola's physical design is the color and choice of fabric. Picked by Ridolfo, 700 meters of Kvadrat's Max fabric is stretched around a frame to create the artistry, with different textiles used on the interior. OLED lighting inside the structure is meant to be soft and inviting.
"Usually we perceive cars from the outside, and then the inside follows," Urquiola said in a press release. "However, our direct interaction is with the inside: it is the core that protects and comforts us, the space in direct contact with our bodies and our functions and needs in the process of travelling. I investigated this interface and tried to understand the possible evolution as a softer, dwelling experience."
For Ridolfo, the artwork is also dictated by the car that served as the inspiration. "To enhance the spirit of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, we have integrated several unexpected details and accessories to create sensory experience and a mood of leisure and gentle surprise," he said.
