    Roll Cage Questions

i've been looking at tons of pics for rollcages for my e30 m3

i want to come up with a decision as soon as possible to figure out what is the best solution and design for my application.

my requirements are pretty much simple; i'm looking for a solution to stiffen the body and prevent it from twisting under load and stress. Another point that i'm looking at is safety. i don't care if it's FIA or as i'm not looking to participate in any sort of national or international event. STRICTLY track days and little autocross that's all.

some of my options that i found:

    OMP

    Autopower

    Customcages.co.uk:

OMP is very expensive and way out of my budget

autopower is cheap but the parellel design is not rigid enough

customcages.co.uk sounds fair and looks solid enough.

practically all the cages above don't provide strengthening for the shock towers in the back

    such as this pic:

Note that the shock tower is completely reformed, although keeping the factory location for the upper hardpoint. Also check out how the cage picks up the rear diff' mount. Thus the rear subframe is completely tied into the roll cage - both through the subframe mounts and the diff' mount.

i guess i'll have to customize this bit to be able to run true coilovers at the back.

i know that most of you don't have knowledge in these things and so do i but does anyone know of any other cages that i might've missed? it should be a weld-in solution.

    DIY FTW!!!

it is not a rocket science IF you are not looking for something professional

if i were you, i would go for autopower and further modify-stiffen it myself

just welding... selection of the pertinent electrode is crucial only...

again IF you are NOT going PRO (E30 M3 chases is stiff enough already...no need pro things IMO)

Bruno, as Pathy said a DIY is always better. I can help you out achieve the rigidity level you're after. I've designed and manufactured a full space-frame F1 chassis, same concepts apply in a roll cage. If it proves to be as expensive to build one locally as it is to ship from abroad, contact Lutfy as he has ordered his E36 M3 roll cage from a private supplier in the States.

Another option is to get the cheapest cage of the above (parallel bars) and we can add diagonals while welding.

        Go for Wiechers!!!!!

        http://www.wiechers-sport.de/

I bought one Wiechers Cage for my Calibra Turbo back in the Day! As my car was road legal i couldnt get the welding Version, so i got the bolt on version and it was perfect!!

i think the autopower looks simple and eazy job, the Customcages looks stronger... but 4 me ill go 4 the autopower....
if u removed all the rust and done it that way so it should b a piece of cake 2 build up ur roll cage ;)

hi Franz i had a look at the website... but as far as my understanding is the cage is not connecting all 4 towers and this is where i need to modify the bars once again. also i don't know if it comes pre-assembled. but worth looking into the A/E design

i'm think i will go with my homemade design based on the DTM version that i have the blueprint for. but will require some feedback from Dr. Ayham.

here is a thread that has tons of info... http://www.s14.net/forums/showthread...highlight=cage

It does not seem very complicated. I kind of agree--DIY FTW! LOL.

Question now is this--how much work will it take to complete this? If you are handy with tools this won't take long I reckon. It seems like an easy enough job. You have the pictures. I think it will be easy to figure out.

i found some decent info in about this topic on this thread...

http://e30performance.info/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=894 probably i will be aiming to customize a horizontal bar connecting both towers with metal plates that are also connected to the bars coming from the roll cage. further to that will extend 2 bars diagonaly through the ground straight onto the rear subframe. :D
