    BMW M4 GTS Prototype Spied!

Like most high-performance vehicles, the BMW M3 was the perfect platform for a dozen special-edition models throughout its history. Who can forget about the E36-based GTR and the E46-based CSL , or even the Cecotto and Ravaglia editions of the first-generation M3? Then there’s the GTS, arguably one of the best-performing M3’s in history. Launched for the 2010 model year and built in only 250 units, the GTS was a more powerful and lighter version of the E92 M3 . The coupe was powered by a 4.4-liter V-8 rated at 444 horsepower and weighed 300 pounds less than the standard M3. These specs made it incredibly fast in the 0-to-60-mph sprint, which took only 4.2 seconds, and quite popular with collectors. All 250 units sold immediately, despite a sticker of €115,000 ($149,000 as of 09/11/2014). The E92 GTS remained the sole GTS built to date, but it seems the Germans have a new iteration underway, this time around based on the M4 .

Although BMW has done its best to parade it as a MotoGP Safety Car , we have reasons to believe this coupe is more than just a pace setter. So why aren’t we buying BMW’s trickery, you ask? Well, certain details surrounding this M4 suggest we’re looking at something entirely different. Something that’s faster than usual, a feat that’s not mandatory with a safety car, whose purpose is to set a pace during yellow flags and not race against the competitors taking part in the event.

For instance, notice the pronounced splitter attached to the front bumper. You don’t see that on either the current MotoGP or DTM Safety Car. The second hint is around back, where the trunk-lid spoiler seen on previous safety cars has been replaced by a large, fixed wing. Now that’s an aerodynamic element a pace car can go without. Other than that and the Recaro seats fitted in the cockpit, the vehicle is unchanged visually, but both the splitter and the wing are indications BMW is working on a track-ready car. The GTS that should be lighter and more powerful than the standard M4.

The prototypes also features M Carbon Ceramic Brakes and race bucket seats, which was also seen in the M3 GTS. One of the prototypes also shows a roll bar and rear seats removed.

If the M4 GTS follows the path of the M3 GTS, expect that it will come as a track focused version of the standard M4 with weight reduction, a massaged S55 engine good for more power, carbon ceramic brakes (already seen on the prototype), a rollbar, 6 point harness, no rear seats, special wheels and special paint color.

Speaking of power, we expect the 3.0-liter six-banger to generate around 450 turbocharged horses — about 25 ponies more than the regular M4. We’re not sure how the Germans plan on shaving a few pounds off the M4 GTS, but a stripped-out interior and some chassis tweaks sound like possible scenarios.

Rumour has it that the production is due to complete for a 2016 release. This one is going to be interesting!
