Our spy spots the recently revealed M3 GTS saloon prototype near the 'Ring
The boffins at BMW’s M division are working overtime these days. While we thought all their combined effort and time would go towards developing the F10 M5, the engineers went through the trouble of building an M3 pick-up just for laughs on April Fool’s, and then pulled the wraps off a special M3 saloon that very day.
We all know what’s happening with the ute, but BMW seems serious about the new four-door, which our spy spotted near the Nürburgring this week.
Price-wise, it should be positioned between the E90 M3 Competition Pack saloon and the M3 GTS coupé (remember our test drive in issue 281?), this new saloon will borrow a lot of its parts from the two-door, including the black kidney grille and 19in rims, upgraded brakes, front splitter and boot-lid spoiler.
However, we expect the new, more appealing saloon to be powered by the standard 4.0-litre V8 from the regular M3 rather than the GTS’ 450bhp 4.4-litre unit. But with all the go-faster bits from the GTS and lower weight, thanks to carbon fibre bits inside and out, this one is going to be a proper track weapon... for the family.
If it gets the green light, this M3 would certainly be a limited edition with a sticker price of about Dh600,000, or more than the previous M5.
